The story
In 33 AD, as Christ is crucified, his DNA is absorbed into the Crown of Thorns. Two thousand years later, in Rome in 2026, the Crown is stolen.
FBI and CIA operatives are drawn into a high-stakes investigation that leads them to The Chosen, a secretive radical sect driven by a twisted reading of prophecy. The sect has extracted Christ's DNA from the relic and used it to engineer a pregnancy, aiming to bring about the Second Coming by science.
A desperate escape ends with a child born on Christmas Eve. A devastating betrayal leaves the infant in the sect's hands, and forces the world to ask whether this destiny was divine, or engineered.
Themes
Faith against fanaticism, science against belief, destiny, power, sacrifice and free will. Crown of Thorns is dark and reverent at once: a thriller that takes its questions seriously.
Where it stands
The treatment is complete and the film is in development. The open ending is built for sequels and an expanded universe. The science-creates-history formula has a strong global box office record: The Da Vinci Code took $760M and Angels & Demons $485M.
Dreamcatcher Films will produce Crown of Thorns through its AI film pipeline, which brings the scale of a studio epic within reach of an independent budget.
